The Engagement Platform (TEP) has today launched a pioneering pupil survey of 100,000 pupils across England, to measure engagement in schools in a census-like moment.

Drawing on compelling evidence from the United States, the TEP pupil research, which has been funded through ImpactEd Group, aims to ascertain whether data on pupil engagement can be used as a lead indicator, or predictor, of likely dips in pupil outcomes and attendance down the line.

“At the heart of the study is a comprehensive survey that delves into a range of factors influencing student engagement, from academic motivation to the overall school climate. We've created an academically robust set of questions that will allow us to explore whether the evidence in the US is replicated in England," said Dr Chris Wilson, Executive Director of TEP.

This innovative approach represents a significant departure from traditional methods of data collection, which have often relied on retrospective views that fail to provide actionable insights. "We're moving away from those bits of data that look backwards at what has happened and hopefully provide information for schools which they can act up on immediately and start to change some of those behaviours, or some of those functions in school, that we might have traditionally regarded as inevitable."

The pupil survey will allow schools to benchmark against other schools and against the national benchmark.

"In our first census in November, we will be asking over one hundred thousand pupils the same questions at the same time to make sure that there are valid benchmarks for those involved, and that schools can identify opportunities and challenges that are unique to their context, or common to the sector or groups of schools" added Dr Wilson, “By surveying such a large and diverse sample of students, we hope to establish a robust set of data that can inform real-time decision-making for school leaders.”

The data from this study will feed into the Research Commission on Engagement and Lead Indicators.
